The Swedish Research Council awards 4.5 million to research project at SKH

The Swedish Research Council has decided to award a project grant for artistic research in 2026 to the project SOLAR SONIC SENSORIES: Staying with listening-through-solar in the digital era, led by Jenny Sunesson.

The Swedish Research Council (VR) is Sweden’s largest public research funding body and supports high-quality research across all fields, including artistic research. Grants for artistic research are awarded annually, and this year nearly 36 million kronor was awarded to a total of eight different three-year projects. No higher education institution was awarded funding for more than one project.

Jenny Sunesson (b. 1973) is a Swedish artist operating within the overlaps of art, research, pedagogy and remix culture. Jenny specialises in sound, its materialities and political potentials, which are examined via field recording and participatory projects, installations, live collages, and video. She is currently an affiliated researcher at SKH, where she was an assistant professor in sonic practice until 2025.

“I am incredibly happy and grateful that the Swedish Research Council has awarded funding to our project. I look forward to working with the project team to explore what it means to listen through unstable solar technologies and to investigate the multisensory and relationship-building possibilities that exist there,” says Jenny Sunesson.

The project SOLAR SONIC SENSORIES: Staying with listening-through-solar in the digital era explores, from a cross-disciplinary perspective, how listening through solar energy can be developed to create relationships between people and ecologies. Also participating in the project are Martin Sonderkamp, Professor of Choreography at SKH, and Suzanna Törnroth, Associate Professor of Design at Luleå University of Technology.

The Swedish Research Council also awards grants for international postdoctoral positions in artistic research. The decisions on these will be published on 28 October.
