Meet the professional field while you study

Already during your studies, you will have opportunities to put your knowledge into practice in professional contexts and meet future colleagues and audiences. Through presentations, performances, placements and work-based learning, screenings on SVT and other media platforms, collaborations and participation in festivals, you gain experience of professional life and opportunities to build networks within your future field.

SKH has extensive connections with the professional field, both nationally and internationally. Our teachers and guest teachers are active within their respective fields, and through collaborations with professionals, networks and industry organisations, you gain insight into different parts of the professional field.

Pathways after SKH

After graduation, our alumni go on to work in many different professional contexts and in a wide range of roles. They work, for example, as dancers, circus artists, directors, actors, pedagogues, producers, filmmakers and opera singers, as well as in other creative and teaching roles.

Many combine several assignments and build their professional lives through freelance work, collaborations and longer-term artistic or educational practices.

At SKH, all our programmes prepare you to build a sustainable professional practice over time, while giving you the opportunity to deepen your own artistic or educational practice and work across different parts of the cultural and education sectors.

Circus

Circus artists work both independently and as part of groups, and often collaborate across artistic disciplines. Our alumni work as freelance circus artists, in international companies, or by creating and running their own groups and artistic contexts.

Contemporary circus is presented in many different settings and to a wide range of audiences, creating a dynamic and international professional field with many different opportunities.

Education at SKH gives you the tools to deepen your methods and develop your own artistic expression, while preparing you to work in a field that is constantly evolving.

A career in contemporary circus can therefore take many forms, combining artistic practice, commissions and collaborations over time, and offering opportunities to build a sustainable professional life.

Dance

Dancers and choreographers work in an international and constantly evolving field. Professional life can take many different forms and often involves several parallel assignments, projects and collaborations.

Many of our alumni work internationally in companies or through their own artistic initiatives and collective practices. Their work may include stage performances, touring, projects, residencies and longer-term artistic collaborations. It is common for dancers and choreographers to combine several assignments and forms of work, with freelance work and recurring collaborations forming part of a long-term professional life.

The dance programme at SKH strengthen your ability to understand and analyse the world around you, work independently and develop artistic awareness – skills that you will need throughout your professional life as a dancer.

Dance Pedagogy

Dance pedagogues and teachers of dance work at the intersection of teaching, dance and learning, in both artistic and educational contexts. Many work in schools and other educational settings, or in projects where dance is used as an artistic or educational form of expression.

As a dance pedagogue, you work with people of different ages and support their development in dance, movement and artistic creation. Graduates of the Teacher education programme in dance work particularly with young people in upper secondary education, supporting their artistic and personal development.

After completing your studies, you can work in schools, educational organisations and artistic contexts, or in projects that you initiate yourself or develop in collaboration with other artists and educators. Your dance education can be combined with other assignments, allowing you to shape your professional role in different ways.

The programmes at SKH prepare you for a professional life in which dance, learning and artistic practice meet, and give you the knowledge and skills to build a sustainable professional practice.

Opera

A career as an opera singer encompasses many different contexts and forms of work. It involves auditions, productions, touring and longer-term artistic collaborations. Many work internationally in opera houses, concert settings or independent companies.

Working as an opera singer requires musical and stage skills, as well as the ability to use your voice and body to portray thoughts, emotions and relationships. A strong stage presence and the ability to move between large dramatic events and more intimate expressions are central to the profession.

At SKH, you develop these skills and abilities through training in musical and stage interpretation at a professional level. To prepare you for professional life, the programme also includes entrepreneurship, mental training and audition training, giving you tools to establish yourself and navigate an international opera field.

Film and Media

At SKH, we educate the independent and artistically aware filmmakers of the future. We offer specialised pathways within film and media while placing a strong emphasis on collaboration and teamwork, providing both specialist expertise and breadth. The education has one foot in the traditional film and media world and the other in the emerging landscape of AI and experimental technologies.

Together, these elements prepare you to enter the film industry and meet the professional opportunities and challenges that await after graduation.

SKH has a long-standing collaboration with SVT, Sweden’s public service broadcaster, and we also work closely with major film festivals, both nationally and internationally.

Our alumni work as animators, cinematographers, film editors, film producers, screenwriters, sound designers, production designers, radio producers and directors of fiction and/or documentary films, as well as in the production of immersive media.

Performing Arts

Working in the performing arts offers many different opportunities. Performing arts can be presented in a wide range of forms and settings. Practitioners work across different genres and often collaborate with other art forms.

SKH’s Bachelor’s programme in performing arts offers the following specialisations: Playwriting/Dramaturgy, Costume Design, Sound Design, Lighting Design, Make-up and Wig Design, Producing, Production Management, Scenography and Theatre Directing.

A Bachelor’s degree in Performing Arts also provides opportunities to continue your studies at postgraduate level, for example on a Master’s programme.

Our alumni in performing arts work in a wide range of performing arts organisations, including theatres, opera houses, dance institutions, event companies, concert halls, independent companies and their own projects, where they have pushed the boundaries of where and how performing arts can be presented.

Acting

As a trained actor or mime actor at SKH, you develop the knowledge and skills to work as part of an ensemble or independently, and to move freely between different genres, media and types of production.

The education at SKH is based on a view of the actor as an independently creative artist, with a focus on stage and theatre. The aim is to give you a foundation in acting while supporting your development towards a sustainable artistic practice throughout your professional life.

Our alumni in acting have started independent companies and gone on to become writers and theatre directors. They work in educational theatre, Hollywood productions, puppetry and television. They can be found on stages throughout Sweden, while some work in radio or on stages abroad. Others teach the next generation.
