Wednesday seminar: Dramaturgy and Holding conflict

This seminar looks at the role of conflict, friction and integration of opposing perspectives within current performance practice and dramaturgical thinking. In the seminar we explore how conflictual thematics can exist and be held in the same moment and frame and ask what dramaturgy can offer to this negotiation and conversation. 

The seminar is part of Synne Behrndt’s research for Dramaturgies of Democracy, a project which brings together dramaturgs, artists, academics and critics to investigate different forms and processes of democracy within artistic practice, collaboration, performance-making and culture and society at large. The project is funded through the ‘Exploratory Workshops within Artistic Research’ scheme, The Swedish Research Council with participation of artists, independent scholars and researchers from Malmö Teaterhögskola, Lund University, Copenhagen University and Stockholm University of the Arts.

Synne Berndt is Professor in Dramaturgy at SKH, dramaturg and performance scholar, specialising in dramaturgy and creative processes and processes of creation.  Recent and ongoing research focuses on the ways in which artistic thinking and creative processes can contribute to – and be part of the picture of – "solution finding" when it comes to the complex questions and issues facing culture, society and communities: One question is how performance-making, artistic and dramaturgical thinking can contribute to finding solutions to challenges which call on ever increasing interdisciplinary approaches. Moreover, what kinds of models and dramaturgies are being developed by contemporary performance makers in light of changing sensibilities and conditions for creation?
