Costanza Julia Bani

I am Assistant Professor of Film and Media Production at Stockholm University of the Arts and a freelance producer/filmmaker working internationally.

At Stockholm University of the Arts, besides teaching, I have a multidisciplinary research project about natural and political borders, anchored along the Alpine Arc, coupled to the disappearing of water resources as glaciers melt and nature redraws geopolitical maps.

My last completed artistic research and multimedia project was about light and sound pollution: Darkness Matters.

The installation first and full dome documentary later were produced separately with Fellonica Film.

Present and past research support my vision of contamination between art and science and creative technolgies and allow me to deepen my praxis as impact producer to ignite societal change making ends meet from an artist’s / film maker's, a scientist's and a distributor’s / exhibitor's perspective.

My research projects are driven in cooperation with Navet at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology), where I also work as a researcher and involve other national and international institutions, depending on the subject matter.

I plan to work with sustainable methods and productions in the arts (got a green-consultant certificate in April 2024). Not only when it comes to contain our impact during the productions, but also proposing content and eco-narratives, stories that deal with the environment and with a post-humanist approach / multispecies story-telling.

My seminars include all stages of the realization of an audio-visual production from talent scouting to packaging and pitching to classic and alternative distribution, including legal aspects. My focus in teaching is to open up internationally and eliminate borders to let filmmakers unfold their stories with an international eye.

I have been studying in Italy, UK and Germany – pursuing parallel an academic career and operating as a professional in the film industry, first as a scriptwriter and consultant, later focusing exclusively on production, considering myself a full filmmaker beyond function norms. I have a PhD in film studies, centering on drama-theory and trans-codifications and their relationship to the film industry‘s economics and politics. I have a diploma as a scriptwriter at the dffb (German Film and TV academy in Berlin) and as a producer at isff in Berlin (Institut für Schauspiel, Film und Fernsehen).

Lately, after being the producer on the feature debuts of Cristina Picchi and Jennifer Rainsford, I have been working on the new films by Erik Gandini and Yasmin van Dorp.

I have earlier in my career participated in the Robert Bosch Stiftung mentorship programs in Romania and Bosnia-Herzegovina and for the Arab World. I was selected both for the documentary campus and dok-incubator. I am an EAVE graduate 2015, a selected participant of the Cannes producer's network 2014 and 2016, a TFL Alumna and Sundance Grantee 2019, a Circle Women Doc Accelerator partaker 2021.
