Develop and deepen your artistic practice

On this two-year programme, you will have the opportunity to develop, deepen and expand your artistic practice through interdisciplinary methods, strategies and critical perspectives relevant to the field. The programme facilitates your artistic, creative and reflective development enabling you to create new directions for your practice. It prepares you for future contexts, such as artistic research, further study or collaborations.

An interdisciplinary framework for theory and practice

The Master’s programme in Performing Arts is based on both artistic principles and a research-oriented approach. The programme also provides the contextualisation and critical perspectives required to work as an artist in the field. The programme is based on a blended learning approach, which means it combines self-study with collaborative exploration.

The subject of Performing Arts is understood as a wide and interdisciplinary field, and the MA offers you the opportunity to undertake a focused investigation within a highly interdisciplinary study environment. Throughout your studies you will participate in creative explorations and conversations with other students, lecturers and artists to share practice and knowledge, develop new methods and engage in critical debates across different artistic disciplines, contexts and practices. The programme introduces you to methods for developing your thinking and writing by engaging with practice-based research, current debates and methodologies within contemporary theatre and performance. The programme is committed to the dynamic integration of theory and practice and a knowledge exchange between the professional practice field and research contexts.

Apply with your own artistic project

You apply to the programme with an individual project where you outline an exploration or investigation which you want to develop during your studies.
The investigation can be directly connected with your ongoing practice which in turn enables you to integrate your ongoing artistic practice directly in your studies. It can, however, also be an artistic investigation which you have developed specifically for your MA studies.

Study online with practical workshops at the university

The programme is delivered online (seminars, presentations and supervision) and includes three 5-day practical workshops per term, during which you will work alongside your fellow students. These workshops are held at SKH in Stockholm and are led by a lecturer or visiting artist. As the programme is mainly delivered online, projects requiring extensive practical and technical support from the school cannot be considered.
