Crip Salons: Don’t Worry I’m Just On Quip Time – Unambitiousness and Access First Working

During this cosy and intimate salon, Amelia will share a case study of Quiplash’s current work, including Y’all Are Lucky I’m Still Here, a devised multi-disciplinary show exploring what it means to be mid-life and mid-career as a queer disabled person. After a week R&D (research & development) with seven queer disabled people, comfy seating and a lot of snacks, Quiplash has found itself with the strands of a new show, and a communally created working practice that embraced queer and crip (Quip) time as a way of making an accessible environment for performers and audiences.

Quip time is one aspect of access-first working, a core Quiplash principle that focuses on having as much access, safety and comfort as possible before worrying about things like “productivity” or “quality”. Quiplash also follows a principle of unambitiousness, meaning no one actually has to do anything, so they get to do everything. This is a core working practice that is joyfully and unapologetically built by and for queer disabled people. 

Amelia Lander-Cavallo
Amelia Lander-Cavallo (they/them) is a blind and neurodiverse artist, author, academic and facilitator, and one of the co-founders of Quiplash. They have worked as an actor, musician, circus aerialist, burlesque performer, drag king, podcast host and more. They also have 20 years of experience in audio description and performance, having created access methodologies that are now used across the UK and internationally. Their experience means they are skilled at facilitating supportive, open environments where people can share honestly and explore safely. Working from an “access first” perspective, Amelia’s work seeks to uplift queer disabled people, and to advocate for others who, like them, live at the intersection of these two identities.
