Crip Salons HT2026

Crip Salons are access-first spaces of gathering and sharing, centring the voices of artists/artist-researchers identifying as disabled, chronically ill, Blind/visually impaired, d/Deaf, neurodivergent, crip and their ways of knowing-doing art and research. 

From cosy, small & intimate roundtables over experimental practice-based sharing to the loud, proud and spectacular, each salon is unique in format and has been collaboratively designed with our invited guest for the day.

Curated and produced by Christina Koch, Professor of Circus & hosted in collaboration with Martin Sonderkamp, Professor of Choreography, SKH Dance, SKH Dance Pedagogy, SKH Circus and the SKH Research Centre. 

*The multivalent word crip is a reclamation and reinvention of the derogatory English-language word cripple. Cripple has historically been used to arouse pity or disdain for a disabled figure, drawing attention to atypical embodiment in order to demean, diminish, or pity it. Reversing cripple’s negativity, crip as a reclaimed term has been used as a marker of proud and at times defiant identification, resisting attempts to diminish or devalue disabled people. Carrie Sandahl theorised “cripping” as a critical practice exposing the arbitrary boundary between what is seen as normal/abnormal, with Christina Cedillo and Remi Yergeau reminding us that to crip is a verb, a way of doing in the world. 

Crifp Salons treat accessibility as a world-building practice.

Salons will
•    have access-centered facilitation: where access needs are solicited and met without burdening participants with justification or explanation.
•    be crip time-based: allowing for flexible pacing, rest breaks, and non-linear structuring of sessions.
•    explore crip-led experimental formats for knowledge sharing.
•    be responsive: leaving open the possibility that we need to change things up on the spot.
